Practical Application Sharing of the DEG1 Docking Station

As the OCulink interface becomes more common on laptops, more users are starting to use OCulink to connect external graphics card docking stations. Compared to Thunderbolt 4, which is a versatile interface, OCulink is specifically designed for external graphics docks. In this function, OCulink offers better cost-effectiveness and lower performance loss than Thunderbolt 4.

Minisforum has launched its own OCulink graphics card docking station, the DEG1. This docking station features a sleek and minimal design with a metal body.

Let's go over the installation steps for the docking station.

The first step is to install the power supply. The DEG1 is compatible with ATX and SFX power supplies, choose the one that fits the graphics card's power requirements.

The second step is to install the graphics card into the PCIE slot.

The third step is to install the graphics card bracket, which secures both the power supply and the graphics card.

The fourth step is to connect the 24-pin power cable to the docking station and plug in the 8-pin power cable for the graphics card.

This completes the setup for the DEG1.

Next, connect the power cables and the OCulink cable to a mini PC or laptop that has an OCulink interface. To power on the DEG1, first turn on the power supply, then press the power button on the side of the docking station. At this point, the graphics card fan will start rotating. After that, you can turn on the laptop or mini PC.

Once you're on the desktop, check the Device Manager under Display Adapters to see if there are any unknown graphics cards. If you find one, visit the graphics card manufacturer's website to download and install the drivers for proper use.

Additionally, we tested the performance retention rate when using the OCulink, USB4, and Thunderbolt 3 interfaces to connect external graphics cards, using the performance scores of the GTX 1080 Ti and RTX 3080 Ti as benchmarks.
The final results are shown in the chart. Please note that due to differences in CPU, memory, and storage configurations between the desktop and mini PC, this data is for reference only.

From the table, we can see that in terms of performance retention, OCulink > USB4 > Thunderbolt 3. So, if you are looking for an external graphics card solution, we recommend prioritising the OCulink interface. The Minisforum DEG1 is your best option.
